What a helpful framework, Alex. What is it that makes us think about things as black or white - all or nothing? Just knowing that each life domain needs to be looked at as a unique experience is totally eye opening. Thank you for this framework!
It was a critical reframe for myself, and then for some of my clients as well! Growth can be uncomfortable…but it certainly doesn’t need to be distressing.
Alex this is the second time I've tried to read this and both times, you've given me such an "aha" moment that I've stopped reading to go and do something / journal down your wisdom. So I still haven't finished reading, but wanted to say thanks - you always manage to say whatever my soul needs to here x
Your brilliance and insight never stumbles nor fails those whom you offer it to in your posts. As a benefit to me I so learn from reading your MOVING BEYOND posts! Truly I have grown in spirit and mindset from your knowledge and wisdom beyond your years. With you I learn, I am inspired, I am encouraged. I am absolutely grateful for you and what you give us when you write about what matters to each person, their well being. I am older yet I learn from you many things, things I thought I knew but far from what you know. Thank you, Dr. Lovell! ❤️🌼
Thank you for sharing your insights on personal growth! I completely relate to your experience with public speaking. For years, I thought diving headfirst into my fears would be the best way to learn. But, like you, I discovered that it often led to more anxiety than progress.
Instead of leaping, I started to reflect on all the things that could go wrong, like forgetting a word or sweating too much. This mindset shift allowed me to practice responses to those situations, which helped me feel more prepared and confident.
I love your idea of expanding our comfort zones gradually rather than forcing ourselves into discomfort. It’s a reminder that growth can be a gentle process. I’m excited to try your comfort expansion model and look forward to celebrating those small wins along the way!
Thank you for such a thoughtful reflection. I think we all are a bit guilty of causing ourselves more anxiety rather than growth! Discomfort has it's place... but I don't believe that distress ever does.
I like how you frame this! I agree that we don't have to go hard or go home. Sometimes softness and receptivity to a new idea and gentle exploration is the way. Life doesn't always work that way, but self-compassion and curiosity go along way to usurping old stories we tell ourselves.
Thank your for your comment. I believe that this: "but self-compassion and curiosity go along way to usurping old stories we tell ourselves" is such a beautiful and succinct truth. Thank you for sharing!
